Professional Experience

John Rosenberg, the Interim Director of AppalReD, is the Clinic Director until the new Director joins the program in the coming months.  Mr. Rosenberg served as Director of AppalReD for 31 years, until he retired in 2002.  In January 2007, he was asked to return a Interim Director until a new Director is chosen.
   
Under the direction of Mr. Rosenberg, AppalReD grew to become an established and integral part of eastern and south central Kentucky.  AppalReD staff have received compliments and awards for their commitment to and representation of clients and client groups in all areas of poverty law.
   
Prior to AppalReD, Mr. Rosenberg was a trial attorney and specialized in civil cases involving voting and public accommodations in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.  He also worked for the United States Department of Justice (D.O.J.).  As the Chief of the Civil Rights Division, he directed nationwide enforcement of criminal laws which protect against interference with civil rights.  As Chief of the Western Section of the Civil Rights Division, Mr. Rosenberg initiated and directed civil and criminal litigation programs including school desegregation cases in California, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma.  As the Deputy Chief of the Southeastern Section, Mr. Rosenberg exercised supervisory trial administrative responsibilities for the enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. 
   
Professional and Community Activities
Through his career, Mr. Rosenberg has also been a leader outside of AppalReD in at least 30 different ways.  He and his wife, Jean, have made significant impacts on eastern and south central Kentucky.  They have received numerous awards for their commitment to public service and the pursuit of equal access to justice.
